That's an old story which I think many people must have read it. I saw this story on Discovery Channel when the host in Incredible India asked mahavat (somewhere in South India) when he was passing the elephants. He suddenly stopped, and get little confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg.
No chains, no cages...strange...this is India...he said that with grin. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not...
What was that reason not allowing elephant to free himself????????
He asked a trainer why these beautiful, magnificent and strong animals just stood there , instead of making attempt to free them from the shackles.
The answer was very interesting---
"Well," he said with a ginger smile on his face -
"When they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it's enough to hold them.
As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away.
They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free."
This answer startled the host. These animals could at any time break free from
Their bonds but because they believed they couldn't, they were stuck right where they were.
Aren't we all stuck in some way or another? Popularly known as mind block.
In one way it is a sort of diseast or better call it a handicap.
Most of us don't really know our real strength, which usually we discover in desperate circumstances. A lot of belief induced in our young minds like don't jump from the table you will hurt yourself or don't hangout with those kids they are bad influence stick with us for the rest of our life. Or this is a chameleon..it will hurt u...but in foreign countries kids play with chameleon.
So its up to your mind...what kids learn they behave later in that way and if they fear off any thing in their childhood, it is very tough to get out of it later on.....
This may even be one of the reasons of generation gap? Maybe!!
So many things we have been told to do or not to do have come in handy in our lives but also has limited us to some extent.
Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?
I remember the famous quote of great scientest Thomas Alva Edison - "I haven't failed, I've found 10,000 ways that don't work".
Many of us are superstitious ....i am not saying all..
Many of us are held back by old outdated beliefs.......eg. female foeticide still going on even in rich and educated regions of India....
People avoid trying something new.........because of there limiting belief.......and worst case is people limit themselves to other's limiting belief.......i pray to god that we all believe in us.
